Pine medals in State Cross-Country

HURON – James Pine, a freshman at Red Cloud high school, finished 17 th earning a medal in the 2007 South Dakota State A cross country meet in Huron at the Broadland Creek golf course on Oct. 20. Todd County’s Marc Whirlwind Soldier, a sophomore, finished up third in 16:31 behind Hot Springs Eamin Entwisle who won it in 16:12 followed closely by Hill City’s Andy Coy in 16:25; Wes Running, another Falcon sophomore, took fifth. Kiko Mendoza, a junior at Takini High school on the Cheyenne River won his third State B cross country championship in a row in 16:39, 15 seconds ahead of Mitch Kraft of Wessington Springs. Scott and William White Buffalo from Jones County came in third and fourth.

Hill City won the boy’s A title while McLaughlin, the defending A champs finished up in third with Todd County boys in fifth. Cheyenne Eagle Butte girls, also a defending champ from last year finished second to Custer with Todd County in fourth. Red Cloud boys took 10 th, CEB boys were 12 th while the Crusader girls finished 14 th in their first ever team trip to state.

Red Cloud runners included James Pine 17(10), Lester Gotheridge 39(67), Wade O’Bryan 41(70), Kyle Blacksmith 66(106) and Chante Knight 80(122).

In the Class A girls run finishers for Red Cloud included Saige Pourier 52, Desirae Blacksmith 57, Laree Pourier 118, Lariah High Hawk 123, Billie White 124 and Ida Clarke 133.

“We just had a number of student athletes who enjoyed running,” said Matt Rama, Red Cloud cross country coach, “cross country is not a glamour sport and running takes discipline, determination and hard work, the team did a really good job, I’m hoping that with the success of sending both the girl’s and boy’s teams to state that we will have even more runners next year building on our success this year.
