Red Cloud High receives support to complete the circle with alumni
posted September 10, 2007

Red Cloud High School recently established the new position of Director of Student Advancement and Alumni Relations, thanks to a generous grant from the Emilie Kolat Hesemeyer Charitable Trust.

The new position will allow Red Cloud to focus additional energies on completing the circle of support with alumni from RCHS.

“Many Red Cloud students experience a close-knit setting at Red Cloud, making the anonymity of life on a college campus a sometimes difficult adjustment,” explains Fr. Peter J. Klink, president of Red Cloud Indian School. “While most Red Cloud graduates excel in their further studies (the many who have won academic awards are testament to this fact), many would benefit greatly by a continuation of the personal support that they received at Red Cloud.”

The generous support of the Hesemeyer Trust will allow us to complete this circle, says Matthew P. Ehlman, vice president for advancement. “We are very grateful to all those who have made this important position for the students of Red Cloud possible.”

Emilie Kolat Hesemeyer had a strong philanthropic interest in Native Americans and was a personal supporter of Red Cloud in her lifetime. Upon her death, this interest guided the establishment of the Emilie Kolat Hesemeyer Charitable Trust. Since 2001, the executors of that trust, Barbara and Pasquale “Pat” M. Gaeta, as well as board members Richard and Patricia Bory, have become close friends of Red Cloud Indian School. Through their continued support of Red Cloud, they have helped solidify the legacy of Mrs. Hesemeyer and her generous and loving relationship with the Lakota students at Red Cloud.

In recent years, Red Cloud graduates have achieved unparalleled successes, including 25 who have been awarded the prestigious Gates Millennium Scholarship. “We are confident these accomplishments are possible because of the multi-faceted educational approach that we take, combined with personal and caring attention from counselors, faculty, and staff, who help to shepherd the students through college admissions and scholarship applications and processes,” says Fr. Klink.

Gina Ferguson (pictured left), who has stepped into the new position, has been instrumental in developing many of the most successful aspects of the current counseling program. “I am excited about this position because I feel it is an important aspect of helping our graduates succeed beyond high school. I am thrilled that I will be able to continue to provide them support during this time of transition.”

Since the beginning of the new school year, Gina has already had numerous phone calls, e-mails, and personal contacts with graduates and their parents. “I know already that this position is well received and needed.”
